Learn how to make a zipper pouch that you can use as a pencil case or for knick knacks!

Date: Sunday, August 10, 2005

Time: 2pm - 5pm

Age: 12 through adult (9-11 year olds are allowed with a paid ticket for an adult who can provide additional help)

Venue: Bloom Sewing Studio at the Market Street United Methodist Church, 131 S Cameron St, Winchester, VA 22601

Note: this class is for beginner sewists, but you should know how to thread the machine, sew a straight stitch, and turn corners. If you would like to participate in this class and do not yet have these skills, please contact me at julie.napear@gmail.com to set up a tutoring session prior to the class so we can go over absolute beginner basics.

I will provide sewing machines, all necessary notions, zipper, and some fabrics to choose from.  If you want to bring your own fabric because you have a specific design in mind, please bring quilting cotton: 1/3 of a yard or a fat quarter. Cotton should always be washed and dried prior to sewing to prevent shrinkage. Feel free to email me if you need help knowing what fabric is appropriate. I have lots of thread colors, but if you would like an exact match, please bring your own. I will have multiple zipper colors, but again, feel free to bring a match if you prefer--it needs to be at least 8 inches long.

Please note that high-quality masks (KN-95 or better) are both PROVIDED and REQUIRED. I realize that this is a deal-breaker for some people; if that's the case for you, please DO NOT purchase a ticket. This class is open to ALL people, including those will compromised immune systems. It is also wheelchair-accessible!

We will:

  • quickly review absolute beginner skills: threading the sewing machine, sewing a straight stitch, back stitching, seam allowance, and turning corners
  • cut your main and lining fabrics and use interfacing or fusible fleece for structure
  • sew your pouch and install a zipper

Total fee includes:

  • one three-hour class (if you finish early, you are welcome to make a second pouch)
  • take-home instructions to make more pouches in the future
  • fabric/thread/zipper for your pouch; sewing machine and notions to use in class.
  • credit card fee

Please email julie.napear@gmail.com to if you are not already on my Bloom Sewing list, or to request other dates/times for classes or private lessons.

Disclaimer: Bloom Sewing is not responsible for injuries. We will be covering machine safety, and the machines have built-in safety features, but there is still risk in working with needles, irons, etc.

No refunds. If you can't make the class at the last minute, or are sick, please contact me asap about a replacement date. Kindly do not come to class if you are sick.
